Better mileage for a 2002 Ranger Edge
Better mileage for a 2002 Ranger Edge
My son has a 2002 ranger edge 2wd extended cab. 3.0 gas. Automatic. It's been his daily driver since he started high school and hes now in his first year of college. It's been pretty bulletproof.
Problem is his mileage sucks. We put BFG 31/10.50x15 on it when he got it. He has a 50 mile a day highway commute to school, work and back home. His mileage is around 11mpg. Truck has about 170k miles.
What can I do to improve his mileage without changing the look the 31s give it? Tuner to change shift points? If so, which one? Other upgrades or mods? I like the truck... prob more than he does.
When he moves onto something else I will most likely keep it. All input is appreciated. Thanks.

Uksparky.. thanks for stating the obvious. With stock tires the truck only got 15 mpg so I seriously doubt sticking them back on the truck will magically grant me an extra 5 mpg.
I have a 2002 7.3 f350 4x4 with big tires and with a few mods (programmer, air filter, 5 in turbo back exhaust) my mileage went from 16 to 20. I just figured it was easier to ask where people might know about the ranger 3.0 rather than re invent the wheel.
2011 supercab. Thanks. Dont know gear ratio. I will check. It's around 2800 to 3000 rpm at 75 mph. Seemed way high to me but this is the first 3.0 I've ever owned.
I didnt know what the best air filter or cold air kit, programmer, or other mods would get me the best bang for my buck or if the would even help. I figured in a forum like this you guys would have seen everything and save me some time. Any little bit will help.

It is high reads like its not shifting into Overdrive, 5th gear
You can go here and plug in the number to get expected RPMs at different speeds: https://www.crawlpedia.com/rpm_gear_calculator.htm
Your Ranger will either have 3.73 rear axle ratio or 4.10
4th gear is 1.00 ratio, 5th gear(OD) is .75 on your 5R44E automatic
Your speedometer and odometer will be off unless the computer was reprogrammed for the 31" tires, stock tires would have been 28.9" so 29", 235/75R15
That would put speed about 7mph off

My 2004 edge with 3.0, auto and 4.10 gears and stock tires runs just under 3000rpm at 75mph. I got 19.5mpg last tank with a mix of 75mph highway and backroads driving. I have some decent hills on my commute. It was getting 15ish when I got it in the winter, on winter blend fuel. Cleaning the MAFS helped a lot, especially with the auto shifting but also in mpg. If your mileage is correctly computed, then before you make any mods you should fix what's wrong.

Same concern here. 04 Edge Supercab Automatic 2WD 3.0L 4.10 rear. 15" rims with tires sized so they are equal to 16"s that are original. After warmer weather got here last I checked we got just under 15mpg in city.
I think maybe 17-18 might our best on highway. No lights on in dash and running fine.
I am open for good ideas for mpg improvement.

Be sure to clean the MAFS - I cleaned mine in the time it took to reheat a slice of pizza. You both have extended cabs, so a bit more weight but it shouldn't be enough more to make a big difference. I do try to drive for mileage, but I don't baby it, and while I also try to avoid the worst hills that's pretty much hopeless on my drive.
