changing alternator, any advice?

so my alternator on my truck died, and i need to replace it. im just goin to do it my self to save money. so far the only thing that might give me a problem is the upper radiator hose. its right over it. so i was thinking to drain a quart or 2 from the cooling system and then remove the hose. or can i just push it back and not remove it to get the alternator out? if anyone has done this before and found any small tricks please let me know. thanks in advance

your owners manual should tell you where it is. and its easy to remove and install the hose can be pulled out of the way shouldn't be any coolant in the top hose.

Before attempting to remove your alternator, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. You shouldn't have to remove the top radiator hose.

You will need a serpentine belt removal tool to be thin enough to drop the belt. Other then that you only need to pull the three bolts that hold the alternator on and the bolt that holds the wire. As was mentioned, disconnect the battery before messing with it. It is also probably worth the few dollars extra to get the "bigger" alternator as opposed to the stock 95A unit.

If you are going to try and reuse the same pulley, you need to have it impacted off and then onto the new unit. I learned this after toasting a pulley and having to order a new one from Ford. Not expensive just a pain. As Takeda said, make sure you disconnect the battery or you may give yourself a jolt while working on it. Don't worry it is as easy as it sounds.

I'm more concerned about shorting 12V to GROUND, creating a huge voltage spike from the Di/Dt, and wiping out stuff like the PCM.
