Icon5 Check Engine Light..first problem ever with my truck

Hello,

I own a 2005 Ranger 3.0 Edge with a freshly installed K&N Cold Air Intake. For the first time since I purchased the vehicle in 2007 a warning light has illuminated. Its either the "Check Engine" or "Exhaust System" light; in the manual they both share the same symbol. The light turned on after a hard acceleration after start up - the engine was previously running for awhile, turned it off for about 5 minutes, then turned back on and hit it..very dumb move I know.. frustration got the best of me

I let the engine cool off for a couple hours and still the light turns on. The MAF sensor looks to be fine, and yes I did check to see if the gas cap is tight

I plan to disconnect the battery tomorrow to see if it switches off, it not run OBD II. Any ideas what I've done?? Oh and if your wondering, i only have 19 000 km on it.

Thanks for your time!

The best thing to do is to get the code read.

Canadian Tire and Princess Auto have some basic ones on for under $20 sometimes. Keep your eyes peeled. Best basic tool to have to help diagnose an issue. It'll get you pointed in the right direction.

I will be the first to blame it on the oily filter.

Are you related to Bob Ayers? jk

Seriously they come pre oiled from K&N so if you added more then yeah that will be your problem. If it has too much oil just clean the filter and add new oil but only to the point where you can't see anymore white. Don't spray it until it drips. That is way too much and it will cover the MAF again.

I didn't add any extra oil to the filter. Need not to worry, the light is off

I just unplugged my black terminal of my battery and put it back on and the light was off, guess I just tripped something and it needed to be reset. Thanks for you time everyone!

My guess is that it will come back on soon. Usually it means something significant. Go give it a good thrashing, and if it comes on again, get it read.

You were right, the light came on again today...ironically as soon as I drove out of my Canadian Tire after purchasing my OBD II reader. The sensor reads that I'm running "too lean". After looking into the flash freeze its showing how it changes from too lean to too rich - how my air sensors are compensating. I also notice I'm running 24g of air per second, is that a little high?

How much of a problem is this? Will getting my truck tuned fix this? Pretty sure that tuning it will void my warranty, anything to do other than a tune?

Thanks once again!

Yeah that's what I plan on doing, but do you believe that it will cause any issues to do harm? And does tuning void?

make sure the intake is on properly, you might have an air leak after the maf sensor. Id also spray the sensor with maf cleaner just to make sure you dont have any oil on it. After that, Id clear the code and wait till it comes back. If it does, take it to the dealer.
