Cleaning Engine Block/Head Surface
Cleaning Engine Block/Head Surface
Hello Ranger Forum,
Model: 2004 Mazda B3000 DS 3.0L
When taking off the old heads off, a lot of gasket material was left on the engine block. I did use a razer edge scrapper and vacuum, but looks like it needs a chemical or wire wheel to remove the remaining residue. My concern is not to scratch or damage the mating surfaces.
Any suggestions for cleaning the engine block and head mating surfaces?
Thanks again for your assistance ahead of time.

Instead of taking the easy way by asking the forum, I put a little more effort into figuring this out and found a good YouTube video on cleaning the cylinder mating surfaces:

I wouldn't worry too much about discoloration, if it feels smooth to your finger then its fine
You can use a flashlight and straight edge to check flatness
Put flashlight behind straight edge and move it along the block surface looking for light coming under the edge, a low spot, or raised spot(light at edges)
2004 3.0l Heads fall into the 2004-2006 window for bad valve seats, so those should be changed and the heads resurfaced

The 2004 will use TTY head bolts, torque to yield, they can not be reused
TTY bolts have the 90deg final tightening thing
This article has correct info for your 2004: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...t-replacement/
Earlier 3.0l Vulcans 1986-1997(??) use regular head bolts, not TTY, so there can be some confusion

Great info, thank you Ron.
So-far-so-good on following the disassembly procedure.
I did use a razor to remove old gasket but was careful not to scratch block. I will check it with the flashlight & straight edge after final cleaning.
