Starter?

Starter?
Sometimes after my truck has been sitting for awhile and I go to start it, it will sound like it's going to start and then it just whines out. Sounds like starter catches then looses and it just spins freely if that makes any sense. If I turn the key off then right back on again and crank, it starts up fine. Is my starter on its way out??
Anyone else ever had this problem or experienced this before?
Thanks.

It could be the bendix unit is dry or dirty and not coming out enough to engage the flywheel. Or the teeth on it are worn. Not sure if you can get just the bendix or if you have to replace the whole starter.
Check the bolts holding the stater on first as they may be just loose enough to not let it line up properly.
If they are tight then drop the stater , inspect the gear, then spray some lube on the shaft.
