criket noise

Its not too bad to replace actually. The cam syncro replaced the distibuter of the older engines. It is located at the very back of the intake, and has a hold down clip that bolts to the intake to hold it in. It will have a single plug on it with a few wires, and is sorta round shaped. Sometimes you can take the 2 screws (found on the top of the syncro assembly) out and remove the actual sensor, and run a tad bit of oil or WD-40 into them which will lube them up and make the squeking or "chirping" go away. But that is definately the problem. If you have to replace it, put some reference marks on the intake (like which way the plug is facing) so that you can put the new one back in the same exact location as the old one. If it isn't in the exact same spot you will get trouble codes.

They are pretty expensive, I think like $300 and only available from Ford last time I checked. If it is running ok and you don't have a check engine light on then the sensor part is fine. The reason it squeaks is because the shaft gets dry in the housing. Pull the sensor off (2 screws on top of it) and just drip some oil in it. If you keep running it dry it can lock up eventually and cause serious engine damage (primarily it causes damage because it drives the oil pump and if it locks up,... well you get where I'm going with that). But a few small squirts of oil should make it good to go again!

Use motor oil .You just remove the cap , not the entire unit.
What you're trying to do is lube the shaft itself where it passes through the bottom of the houseing.
Inside the houseing base is a bushing which doesn't recieve normal lubrication when the engine is running (poor design). When the bushing wears out , the gear on the syncro shaft bottom , which is driven by the camshaft gear , no longer meshes with the cam gear and the teeth strip off.
The cam syncro shaft also drives the oil pump.
So in a nutshell ;
Bushing wears
syncro gear breaks
no oil pressure
replace engine

is the noise like a non stop squeal or is it like chirp.....chirp......chirp. And it only does it under medium to full throttle? Is your A/C on...i think it is the A/C kicking on and off and making the belt chirp...i think your cam synchro is fine. see if it does it with the air in the off position.
