Cylinder 4 and 5 misfire
Cylinder 4 and 5 misfire
Hey guys what’s up.
I have a 2002 3.0 5speed
The check engine light came on and when I ran the numbers showed the 5th and 6th cylinder were misfiring. When I took it to shop the guy told me the 4th and 5th cylinder have a bad compression. He said the truck is not worth fixing but did not tell me what specifically is causing the bad compression on those cylinders.
Worst case is a broken head gasket right?
What do you guys think might be causing the bad compression?
I’ve had the truck for about 4 years now and I haven’t really needed to do any major work on it besides changing out the spark plugs 2 years ago. Everything else has been fine with regular up-keep and routine maintenance.

Yes, could possibly be a bad head gasket, but more likely is bad valves, assuming engine hasn't been overheat in the past few months, that's what blows head gaskets
And since they are adjoining cylinder, 4 and 5, head gasket between them could be the reason
But the 3.0l was hard on exhaust valves, so............
For about $75 each, a head can be tested once it is off the engine
In either case its usually less costly to replace both heads and head gaskets at the same time, if you are not doing the work yourself
Labor is about $600, about 6 hours at $100/hour
2 Heads are $375 complete(new valves installed), although a shop may charge you $500
Other parts and fluids $300
So about $1,275
Not sure what the mechanic means by not worth it???
Is this Ranger falling apart?
Rusted frame and transmission issues?
Wheels falling off?
Because cost of any vehicle repair is not based on the value of the vehicle, ever
If you think you can drive this vehicle 3 more years with working engine, and cost of repair is say $1,500
Then that's $1,500 divided by 36 months so $40 per month to drive it, not sure what other used car you can get for $40/month.................
Or what kind of used car you would get for $1,500, that didn't need work
If you drive it 5 more years then it only cost you $25/month
You are there, and know the truck, so only you can make the call on what its worth to you to use it, and if it will last 3 more years or 5 more, or ...............
The value of any vehicle it what its worth to you in your daily or monthly use, its ONLY when you SELL IT that someone else's opinion matters on "what its worth"
