Died on freeway and now turns over but won't start

Recently I was driving home and my 2002 Ford Ranger died on me. Now when I try to crank it, it turns over but won't start. I have tried 50/50 test and it still won't start. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Can you hear the fuel pump turn on when the key is turned on?

Welcome to the forum

When you turn on the key does the CEL(check engine light) come on?
This means the Computer(PCM) has booted up OK

When you try to start the CEL should go OFF as soon as engine starts to turn, not start just turn, that means Crank sensor is sending a good Timing pulse to PCM, no timing pulse = no spark and no fuel

Crank sensor is one of the few sensors that can stop a running engine, but they rarely fail

Which engine do you have in the 2002 Ranger?
2.3l, 3.0l or 4.0l?

Oops, 3.0l from this sub forum

It could be Cam sensor if 50/50 test gets a no start
I know on some years the 3.0l PCM wouldn't allow startup if CAM sensor stopped working
Cam sensor is on one end of the oil pump drive, so no cam sensor signal "could mean" no oil pump, so you would want a No Start

I would expect memory codes for Cam sensor issues, i.e. P0340's, seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...trouble_codes/

Other than that ???

50/50 test and no fire/no start means no spark or no compression
You could pull out a spark plug and test for compression, never heard or read about 3.0l timing chain issues, ever, so long shot
But crank gear or cam gear uses woodruf keys and they can shear off so engine loses crank/valve timing and low/no compression

Coil pack has 3 coils inside, engine would still fire even if 2 were bad
PCM just quitting is possible, but one of the very very last stops, Test with an OBD2 reader to see if you can "talk to it"
