engine install question
engine install question
After about 4 hours I finally managed to get my rebuilt 2.9l into my 1988 4WD manual transmission Ranger. The engine is sitting flat against the bell housing and I have a couple of the bolts in.
I put the truck in 2nd gear and tried manually turning over the engine with a breaker bar. I did this to see if the engine was mated properly to the transmision. My thinking was if I crank over the engine, and am in gear, that I should feel some resistance or maybe some slight movement forward in the truck. Nothing. The engine spins freely when I crank with the breaker bar.
I then went to check the 4WD selector in the truck (a manual one, not the electronic kind). It felt like it was stuck in neutral. I could move it up and down a little bit, but I could not select 2WD or 4 low or anything. If it was in neutral that would explain why turning the engine over manually was easy and the truck didn't move. Plenty of fluid in the clutch reservoir.
My question is.....
Can I go ahead and start putting the rest of the engine together? If the engine and the clutch are mated together, does that mean the the spindle from the clutch is properly engaged in the engine? Or can the engine and bell housing be connected, but the internal connection is off?
More to the story.... I put my inspection camera into the inspection port on the bottom of the bell housing. I can see the clutch slave cylinder and spring. When a helper depresses the clutch, I do not see anything move.
Should I see the spring or the release bearing move? What to check next? New flywheel, clutch, pressure plate. Clutch feels really easy to depress.
Thanks

Every time I've had a slave go out. You can turn the truck off put it in gear push within the ****** to prompt the impartial safety switch. Turn the important thing and it'll release ahead. Truck will run get the rpms high enough then you permit of the fuel and pull it out of gear. Rev and pull it into the following equipment while the rpms fit it will fall into gear. In fifth tools I ought to push the pedal to the ground and get the rpm to elevate some hundred. I'm making a bet its the slave. Its commonplace in these vans. Honestly ****** work isn't difficult. The toughest component is losing the tranny. Just becauae 3 like 50 bolts to turn and frequently not much room. Once its aside its quite self explanitory. Like its eeasier that pulling the transmission. Its like 10-20 mins to position the ****** flywheel throw out and slave in. Hardest part is attending to it. I don't keep in mind the exact order the elements cross in. I ussually simply put them in opposite of the way good day came out. But simplest appear to consider bolting the flywheel on. Torque it down. Then put the grab on it positioned the alignment device in. Then bolt it on. Then update your slave and throwout. Actually I assume I do throw out first. Any who its terrific easy once your in there If you have got a first rate set of equipment, can bleed brakes, and got a first rate jack. It can be executed in a day I paid one thousand$ to have a store update all the components cited with rear essential. So this is a good rate. I say do it. If you want any assist unwell publish returned.
