Engine rebuild tterips - where do I start?
Just noticed typo in the title...
I'm new to the site and could use some advice.
I have a 2006 Ranger w/3.0 L V6. recieved a P301 error and local mechanic changed the rod bearings via the oil pan. Ran fine for about 8 mo. and I knew this was just a short-term fix, but issue is back and I believe a rebuild is next.
Questions:
1. Will repair shop give a warranty for the rebuild?
2 Is there a preferred rebuild kit I should have the shop use?
3. I am thinking all new internal parts should be replaced. Crank, rods, pistons, valves, etc.
4. Other thoughts, since I have not done this before.
I want to keep the truck long-term, so I would like to get it done right with quality parts.
Oh... ball park cost?
Z.

Most rebuilt 3.0 long blocks are around 3k plus tax/shipping... plus labor... then you have your add on's it mounts up fast, one year warranty on the engine ,.. 90 days on shop ...correct me if i am wrong guys
Mine was about 3400.00 Canadian dollars.
Had the whole works done, new pistons, and all balanced.
I used my old rods and my crank was in good shape, so it was just polished.
I had the heads pressure tested, new guides and valves all around _ new lifters too of course.
I used Felpro gaskets and my machine shop has been using them for at least 40 years.
Zandar, I think your year may fall into the soft valve seat problem, so look into that and be prepared to deal with that.

Welcome to the forum
Yes, 2004 to 2006 Rangers with the 3.0l Vulcan engine got a batch of low quality valve seats, this caused misfire codes to come and go and then come and stay
Both heads need to be replaced.
Why did shop replace rod bearing(s)?
That's not related to a misfire....................
How many miles on the chassis?
What kind or transmission, manual or automatic?
2WD or 4x4?
All these matter to make right decision for rebuild or replace

Yes, you can have the recessed valve heads rebuilt, new valve seats and usually plan on 6 new exhaust valves since some will be burnt
Then grinding valves and seats(valve job), check head for cracks(first, lol), then surface the head
You may want new valve guides, but judgement call, for sure new valve guide seals but they come with gasket sets
You get the estimated cost for this and then weigh it against the cost of new heads
Ford put on new heads because they don't have a "Ford machine shop" in each town, and can't take the chance on "local shops" since they have to warranty it
Not sure what Ford shops did with the old heads, may be they did send them back to be rebuilt?

Just asking; my machine shop would give the option to rebuild so they can make some money and still remain competitive, or break even.
Most times a feel more comfortable having something rebuilt locally because I know what I have and I can trust my machine shop to do it right.
I can also understand if one doesn't have a trusted machine shop, where a set of remanufactured heads would be more practical.
Seats, guides and valves are very inexpensive for this truck, so that's not an issue.

Yes, there is also the time factor for some people
If engine still runs, poorly, but gets you to work and back, and its your only car then ordering new heads and gasket set so you can swap heads in a weekend may be what you decided to do.
Machine shop is usually a 2 day minimum, and not weekends, lol,
Although my local machine shop does do stuff Sat. morning, but have to pick it up by 1pm or wait until Mon. morning to get it
