Excessive RPM during downshift

I have 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L 4x4. I know that downshifting when pressing the throttle down more than 50% on the highway to get up and go is normal. However it seems like my truck drops one to many gears when I do this. It'll drop two gears and the RPM shoots to 5,500 RPM (RPM Gauge max is 6,000 RPM). Then in it immediately (1-2seconds) will go up a gear (sometimes getting very close to 6,000 rpms).

I know a lot of car's rpm guage go all the way up to 8,000 rpms. So is this normal and nothing to be worried about?
