Going to look at a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT

Its a 4x4 5 Speed, and i am wondering, is 160k miles on this truck worth buying? The guy says its a very clean truck, no rust, etc. Im wondering if 160k is a decend mileage for a 99. How much longer will it last? He wants 4,000 for it which kelly blue books says is the most to get out of it. Any ideas?

To me... I think the $4K is high unless the seller is willing to give you some sort of warranty, i.e. he pays for all repairs for a set period of time.

You never know when a Timing idler or belt will let go after the 100k mark.

What kind of work has already been done on the truck, might give you an idea of what you are getting into, ask for the slips !

Kelly blue book prices, are inflated! have u checked Nada? And of course what are some comparable rangers going for in your area? I agree though, $4k seem awfully high for a 99.....it’s hard to say how long it may last, I mean how well was it maintained?.. what engine is in it?

4k is pretty pricey, but that doesn't mean that's what you have to pay him. I would check it out and if its really as clean as he says it is (a lot of the time its not) then 4k might be worth it, but there's always something that you can talk them down on! Don't be a jerk about it but if headlights are faded or there's some paint blisters, ripped seats, anything like that you may be able to talk him down. Like Scrambler said, it does have 100k miles on it. And its also a 1999, for comparison, I have a 98 F150 with around 200k on it and it still runs, just needs more frequent repairs but I trust it to tow a bass boat and me to lakes all over the place. I have an 07 ranger that I bought last year in May with 98k miles and it now has 107k, it has been doing great other than the rust issues and the L switch on the tranny cracking but motor wise its been absolutely perfect. So my ranger has around the same mileage and Its been doing well. But you need to consider that the ranger you are looking at is almost 10 years older. Parts tend to decay, rubber cracks, things loosen, gaskets break down etc, etc. In the end its your judgement to tell whether its worth it or not. You can always expect to pay more for 4x4 but i'm sure that the seller isn't firm on that price.
Just my two cents.
Good luck and post some pics if you end up buying it!
Tom

Thanks guys, ended up buying for a bit less. She's beautiful! Entire undercarriage is pristine condition, even for being in PA! No rust at all.

She's a beauty! You're lucky on the undercarriage, thats the main thing I'll be looking for in my next truck is a good undercarriage. Love the wheels!
