Need help with removal of stock fan please!
Alright, I have read, re-read, and studied the posts about the fan removal. I got a jusnes modified efan the other day and I went to install it today with no luck!
I tried the "chisel method" and the "rental tool method" (which might I add, sucked, not one of the 6 i was given was the right one) and I tried the strap wrench method. Anyone got any idears? I might try to buy a stronger strap wrench (the one I have isn't too hot) but the pully keeps on slipping, I can't even get the shaft to budge.
Help please?

The pully just slips when I move it any, even if I put torque on the tensioner bolt (tighten the belt)
I tried everything...I'm lost. I may try the chisel again today, but I've about had it with trying to get it off. I can't seem to get it!
Thanks for the help though

you need a fan removal tool. It holds onto the 4 bolts that the water pump pulley is held on with. While holding this you can use a wrench to loosen the pulley. With the 3.0 you have to remove the 4 bolts holding the water pump pulley on, slide the pulley forward, then reinstall the bolts. This is necessary because the bolts are recessed into the pulley.
If you have another means to hold the pulley still it will work, but this is the tool designed to do it. Some parts stores will rent one to you for nothing or you can pay about $15 for it. A "Ford Removal" will work to hold the water pump bolts, but the actual fan wrench will be the wrong size. Luckily that is a common size for a wrench. There may be room to use a cresent wrench in there also, I don't remember. It is reverse thread. Once it is "loose" it will freely spin. All you have to do is get it loose.
Here's a quick how to I did to illustrate this. I need to correct it to reflect the water pump pulley needing to be slid forward:

When I took the fan off of a 2001 4.0 the clutch nut removal kit I was loaned from autozone did not fit either. I ended up using a really big fixed wrench on the clutch nut and managed to make one of the tools in the kit work for holding the pulley in place even though it didn't fit correctly.

I've never had the wrench not fit the pulley bolts although the used rental ones can be worn out a little. The fan clutch is a different size between the 3.0 and 4.0. Everyone I had would fit the 4.0 but not the 3.0. I am pretty sure on a 3.0 that there's room for a large crescent wrench to fit in there. - one bump with a hammer and it's loose. It's amazingly easy with the right tools.

ahhh, I did not know that you have to losen the pulley bolts and slide it forward! No one told me that little detail!!!
All the swearing, throwing tools (I broke my headlight by accident too), etc...could have been avoided if I woulda just read!!!
I'm going to try it again tommorow or monday...I was getting ready to sell my e-fan too!!!
Alright, I'm going to try that, I have the fan pulley tool, and I have a wrench that fits, it's actually a cresent.
Thanks!!!!

The problem was getting the fan shaft off, but now I know how to do it, and I have the proper tools. I will attack it on monday or wednesday. Shouldn't be hard now that I know how to do it.
Just fix that how to...please? Either that or I will make one just for 3.0's...i'll give ya credit of course though
It woulda made it A LOT easier had I have known, I broke my headlight by accident from doing the wrong manuver to take my fan off. It's ok though, it's all worth it in the end!!!

That extra info has been added. The process is not cut and dry so you may still have to think your way through a problem. One example is getting the 4 bolts off the pulley. You are gonna have to figure out how to keep the pulley from spinning while you remove the bolts. I was able to Loosen all 4 bolts first (before removing them) while the belt was still attached. This may or may not work everytime. Somehow you will need to hold the pulley. If the belt motor tries to spin, you should be able to put a wrench on the alt pulley to hold it. If it still spins you may be able to hold onto the fan shaft with the wrench. Not sure how much working room you'll have by holding the fan.

Ok, my turn. I've got the 4 10MM screws off....the pully didn't turn at all while doing it which is good, but I can't get the damn pully off. It looks pretty rusted behind there.
I sprayed it with WD-40 and I tried hammering it with a ball peen hammer. Its still stuck on there like a bastard. I've rotated the pully using my crescent wrench so I can bang evenly around the pully to loosen it...nada.
Any thoughts?

I had quite a few probs (wayne knows about it)
1. not knowing how to properly use the "fan removal tool" (you have to unscrew the bolts
2. getting the pulley loose (wd and a hammer (and also a chisel) worked like a charm)
3. belt size (i finally got the right one...thanks wayne!!!)
The wiring was a PITA because I installed a switch...but other than that, the wiring is easy.
Just tap off of you pruple wire on your A/C in your cab and tap off your radio for ACC wire...tahts what I did.
if you have any questions, i've been there done that (wayne has too) so, just pm me or something...i can answer most questions
