Losing oil pressure
Losing oil pressure
I've got a 2002 ford ranger with a 3.0 v6 and it's losing oil pressure when the engine gets up to temp it doesn't do it when it's cold just when it gets hot does anyone know what it can be
Welcome to the forum
Are you basing the loss of oil pressure only on the dash board gauge or can you HEAR the valve train making noise?
If you don't hear anything then replace the oil pressure switch in the engine bay
In a 3.0l its on passenger side, behind the head, on the block next to the bell housing
Here is a picture of the rear of a 3.0l on an engine stand: https://www.ranger-forums.com/attach...h-dscn0413.jpg
You can see the cam sensor and synchro in the center, and to the right is the oil pressure switch, with the white connector
So its kind of hidden, but certainly replaceable
Valve train will make a lot of ticking noises if oil pressure is actually low, for sure, can't miss it

The oil switch is set as 5.5psi, so 5psi switch is OPEN and 0 on the gauge, 6psi CLOSED and "normal" on the gauge
You can try this
Unplug the coil pack, 4 wire connector
Remove the new oil switch
Put a towel/rag on/around the opening
Crank engine over 5 seconds
Clean up mess, lol
Put oil switch back in, make sure lower threads are BARE METAL, no tape
See if it works
If not run a thicker oil at next oil change, 10w40
