Motor Trouble

My Dad just had the motor swaped in his 87 Ranger and at first it ran great but about a day ago it started idleing crappy and started skipping alot. We changed out the fuel filter and spark plugs and still have this problem. Its also blowing out black smoke and carbon, do you guys have any idea why it would be doing this???
Thanks
Will
BTW The motor is just another stock 3.0 V6

Both the trucks had the same motor in them V6 , I hydrolocked the first motor and had the other one put in. The parts truck was an automatic and ours is a 5spd but we kept our tranny in are truck. I don't think the mechanic swapped the ECU's but ours being a 5spd it probibly wouldn't work anyway.

BTW Since we changed the plugs it seems to be running alittle better but it still skips every once in a while, do you guys think changing the distributer and plug wires would help any further?

Thanks
Will

Maybe the valve seals weren't installed properly and you have oil in the cylinders? What do the plugs look like when you take them out?

4 out of the 6 looked good but 2 plugs had alot carbon on them. But I don't see how the seals could have been screwed up if all he did was swap motors?

Oh, I see. I thought it was rebuilt. Still could be valve seals. You don't know what shape that other motor was in to begin with, really.

I suppose really bad injectors that don't spray but just leak could do that maybe. But you'd smell gas in the exhaust I think.

The motor in the parts truck has been rebuilt but the guy we bought it from drove it for awhile after the rebuild. I'm going to change the wires and see if that helps any.
Thanks
