Need help! Oil pressure Gauge goes crazy then stops working, and then knocking starts

So when I start up my truck 3.0 v6. The oil pressure gauge will work for a few minutes then start having a seizure and goes nuts, during which the engine starts knocking atfter the gauge stops working completely. Then at a idle the truck will die but it will start back up but the problem persists. It has been sitting for about a month being started occasionally so the battery doesn't die.

Welcome to the forum

If there is ANY noise associated with loss of oil pressure then do NOT run the engine, the noise means this is NOT a gauge/sender issue, its a REAL loss of oil pressure

Couple of things you can do first
Check the oil level, maybe you are low, if so thats the problem, after startup oil is pumped to the top of the engine and it takes awhile to drain back down so oil pan runs out of oil

Change the oil filter, and add a quart of oil, a plugged oil filter can cause your issue

You can start the engine, but if you hear a noise then shut it off ASAP

After this you are down to oil pump drive and oil pump, which means lifting or pulling the engine to get oil pan off

Was oil pan gasket repaired at any time in the past, people often use RTV sealant on oil pan gaskets, and use TOO MUCH, so when pan is re-tightened little ***** of RTV drop into the pan where they are sucked up into the oil pump's pickup screen and block flow

You can sometimes use a snake camera thru the drain plug to see the pickup screen

Thank you, I'm currently at work and on lunch I noticed my oil filter was loose, I tightened it up best I could and added a quart of oil. I turned the truck on and let it idle for a couple mins and everything worked fine. Hopefully when it's time to go home the problem is fixed. I'll add another quart of oil as well when I stop at the gas station. Thank you so much for this info. Your a god send.

Or 2 or 3, you need to check the oil level before dumping oil in.

Yes, +1 ^^^^

Too much oil in the oil pan is bad as well as too little, thats why there is a dip stick, needs to be in the "Goldilocks" range, "just right", lol
