Oil Filter came loose?
Short story, a week ago I switched out both heads on my Vulcan 3.0. All went together great, drove 300 miles on the motor this week. Yesterday went out for a bit, came home, and found an oil trail where I was previously parked. Checked and found oil coming from the oil filter area. Did an oil change, when I went to remove the old oil filter it was already unscrewed a couple of turns, not tight, found where the oil was leaking. My previous oil change was 6 months ago. Trying to figure out how the oil filter could come loose on its own. I have been wrenching on my cars/trucks for 30 plus years, never seen or heard of this before. All I can think is when I did the head swap particles fell into the motor from cleaning the block, then plugged up the filter, created extra pressure and oil pushed out between the motor and filter and the vibration of the truck slowly loosened the filter? Glad I caught this before it came all the way off! Crazy thought? What do you all think?
That is a possibility. I'm doing this same thing right now. I'm actually going to put the new heads back on today and finish it up tomorrow. I knew I would get some junk down in the oil no matter how careful I was so i will do the oil change before i do the initial restart of the engine. I'm sure there is also water / coolant in there too!
