replace the rear main seal
replace the rear main seal
My 05 3.0 XLT 5 speed 2WD is leaking oil from between the motor and the transmission.
I assume this is the rear main seal.
I do some of the wrenching needed on my truck but this is way over my head.
What should I expect to pay a reputable shop to perform this service on my truck.
I dont know if geography plays a role in this but I do live in northern California.
I gotta get this done, its my work truck. Plus I dont want to be the cause of the next massive wild fire out here.
I did purchase a new fire extinguisher yesterday as a first line of defense.
Anyone know what a ballpark cost would be?

Its basically the same as doing a clutch, but without the new parts for the clutch, but you may want to also have a new clutch put in since its not much more labor just parts
Yes, varies a lot by area, $700-$850 for doing a clutch, so -$100 for clutch parts, $600-$750 maybe, rear main seal is $15 but they may want/need to use a "Sleeved" rear main seal
When a rear main seal fails it can leave marks on crank journal, if you put in a new main seal then it may start to leak within a few weeks because of the "damage" on the journal
So many shops only use "sleeved" rear main seal replacements, about $35
A very thin "sleeve" is put over the "damaged" crank journal, and a slightly larger main seal is installed, this gives the new seal a smooth surface to ride on so no more leaks
Starter needs to be removed
The transmission needs to be removed, so drive shaft, shifter in cab and exhaust pipes dropped
Flywheel needs to be removed
They now have access to rear main bearing
There is a rear Cam plug just above crank, it should be looked at for signs of a leak

Cam plug can be seen above the crank
All the way at the top of engine is a Cam synchro and sensor
To the right of that on top of the block, but behind passenger side head, is the Oil Pressure switch, just FYI

Thanks RonD. I really appreciate your wealth of knowledge.
The clutch is relatively new as is the transmission.
What is the best way to clean all that oil and the accumulation of dirt and gunk out from the underside of my truck.
I have to admit that I have let this situation go on for far too long and working on projects down dirt roads have caked a mess up under my truck.
I spent one afternoon in coveralls up under there scraping crud off every level place where **** would accumulate.

So Ill drive er up onto the ramps, put on my rain slicker and my goggles (forget about the snorkel) hook my pressure washer to my water heater, crawl up under there again and blast away.
Im sure my mechanic will appreciate this effort.
Ill worry about cleaning the oil and gunk off my driveway later
Ide be willing to scrub my tranny once its out if they dont mind me being around when the work is being done.
Thanks for your advice
