Replacing fuel pump for first time

Hello,

92' Ford Ranger XLT with 2.9 V6. My in-tank fuel pump is failing. I'm going to replace it myself for the first time. I'd like to remove the pick-up bed because I heard this is easier than working from underneath.
Is it 4 to 6 bolts? I can't tell since I got a bed liner. Will I need to disconnect tail lamp harness? Thanks.

6 bed bolts, Torx 55, may need impact driver to loosen and remove these, 2 longer ones at the front, 4 shorter in the rear
3 phillips screws on Filler Tube

If you are sliding the bed back, or pulling it off, then yes you need to unplug the tail lights
If you are tilting the bed up then you don't need to unhook tail lights

Ok. Thanks. I looked on the auto parts website today to select a fuel pump assembly. After I entered 92' Ford Ranger XLT, 2.9 V6................it wanted to know if my truck is standard cab or extended cab. Which one is mine?

Should I also pour some type of cleaner or solvent in the fuel tank and swish it around?

No, on pouring anything into gas tank, gasoline IS a solvent

If you don't have 2 jump seats and lots of storage space behind front seats then you have a regular cab

Regular and extended cabs have different size gas tanks, so different fuel pump assemblies

After running new fuel pump for a few weeks change fuel filter, if you haven't changed it in last 5 years.

So you're saying it's not necessary to remove gas tank and slosh cleaner around?

Because If I'm working with bed removed, the tank would remain bolted in place.........unless I should suction out old sediment and impurities from the mounted tank.

I only ask since I have never done this repair before.

I definitely got the extended cab

Unless a vehicle has been sitting a long time there should be no sediment, impurities or other stuff in the tank, and its a plastic tank, so no rust

And just FYI............Do NOT use a Shop Vac(wet/dry) with gasoline, it can explode

I removed the bed liner and surveyed the fuel tank and fuel pump connection layout this morning. Am I correct in locating the fuel pump to tank connection in the photo? It is close to the tank filler neck, and at the front wall of the pickup bed close to the cab. I think I see the notched locking ring too.

If that is the fuel pump connection, this is what I hope to do. I'm kinda' thinking outside the box. If I drill a couple exploratory holes in the bed and measure off distances using distinguishing features, I think I can cut an access hole in the bed. I don't think I would even have to lift the bed, lower the tank, or disconnect the filler neck. And I could put a protective shield or piece of wood over vulnerable areas when cutting

I see one fuel line clip in the photo. Are there any other fuel line fasteners, clips, or clamps I'll need?

I already have a grinder with cutting wheels. I have wrap-around protective glasses. Enough, or a full face shield required?

Its really a lot more work to cut access hole than to lift the bed.

And you may have to change a fuel pump ONCE in the life of the chassis, 500,000 miles so.................

Remember this an aftermarket part. I have to replace my fuel pump assembly every 5.5 to 6 years. And the extreme Arizona climate is hard on parts too. That's why I was thinking about cutting that access hole. For my year/make/model, where are the tail light harness connectors located?

I've heard of gas tanks having drains at the bottom. Does 92' Ranger have this?

No, no drain

After you open up the top and pull out assembly you can use a hose to siphon the fuel out if you want

Ok. Thanks Ron.

Is this a single wire harness connector that serves tail light assemblies on both driver side and passenger side? This is underneath close to the rear bumper.
This connector is tapped into a wire bundle that trails to tail lights on both sides.

What symptoms are you experiencing that led you to replace the fuel pump?

This repair is done now. The real cause was a bad EEC relay. Starting problem is gone. Fuel pump and fuel sender connector would have needed replacing anyway. So I don't regret replacing those as well.

Resolved. Thanks very much.
