Smoke coming from back of engine.

I think it’s the braided insulation around a hardline that runs in between the back of the engine and the firewall. The braided insulation
it’s pretty tattered. could it be that it’s just getting hot next to the engine and burning?
it seems when I moved the insulation up and down (it’s like a sock) The smoke point moves with it. Can I just cut that insulation off and be OK or do I need to replace the insulation?
