My 2002 ranger edge doesn't start right when cold if replaced idle air control 3 or 4 times it starts fine when warm but you either have to hold accelerator down or cycle key to get it to start it cranks fine any ideas would be appreciated tia
Assuming there are no CEL on, my first line of thought would be to check for pending trouble codes with an OBDII reader. When you say cold, are you referring to the temperature outside or the engine that has not been running for an extended period? It sound like you may have a weak fuel pressure problem. Easy diagnosis with a fuel pressure tester. Dirty filter? Fuel pump failing? Changing the fuel filter is always a good idea and inexpensive, may solve the problem. If it doesn't, it needed changed any way.
BTW.. the accelerator is an air pedal with a position sensor, it doesn't pump any gas. With the engine cold and sitting for a while, cycle the key on and off for 2 secs each time WITHOUT cranking the engine, then try to start it.

+1 ^^^
Does your engine idle above 1,000rpms on its own when started cold?
It should
Then idle should drop slowly as engine warms up
If not change your ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor, computer use this sensor to set CHOKE mode on cold start, this mean extra fuel is added and high idle is set
All Gasoline engines need to be Choked when cold or they won't start or run well until warmed up
ECT sensor will have a grey/red stripe wire attached
NOT a red/white stripe wire, that's the dash board temp gauge sender, they look similar but one is 12volt(sender) the other 5volt(sensor) so not interchangeable
