Icon11 Vacuum troubles, hoses dangling

Recently bought a 94 Ford Ranger extd cab 3.0L and of course as its an old truck it has its share of problems.
Heard a hissing noise from underneath and found a couple tubes dangling. the one that was hissing had come from on top of the engine and the other I believe connected to the nipple over top the transmission box. after connecting the two together the truck blew smoke when taking it for a test drive. while underneath the truck I found another nipple to the side in which i was informed could be the 4x4 inlet/outlet. I cant find a good place for a diagram so I was hoping other people had dealings in this matter. at the moment I have 3 nipples, 2 hoses and lots of head scratching.
