My 94 Ranger came with a 4cyl engine originally but the previous owner did a 6cyl swap. The engine blew already and I'm looking for a replacement. What size or year engine can I just drop in without major modification? Any other car's engine I can put in there?

 

is it a 3.0 or a 4.0?

 

Since this was posted in 3.0L, I suppose the V6 that was swapped in was the Vulcan. So any 94 and prior 3.0s will work if your current 3.0L has a distributor. If it has a coil pack, then only a 95 engine will work.

I found a low mileage 4.0 V6 with a 5 speed Out of a 98. Would it fit fairly simple in the truck?

 

I just brought the truck home, it was only 4 blocks away. It starts right up and runs, but after 3-4 minutes it starts smoking bad. Mechanic said it probably has bad rings. It had a 4.0 engine swap, I just don't know about the tranny yet. I'm just going to look for a complete engine, last time I tried a rebuild I spent almost as much dough and wasted enough time to get a good used one. What year explorer or ranger can I get a 4.0 from?
