White Smoke
White Smoke
Have an 88 Ranger 2.9 that has some wispy white smoke a few minutes after start up that goes away after driving for a bit. Normally would be jsut condensation, but always comes back if I sit at idle, and blows out soot when rev-ed. Tail pipe is coated in black soot. Averaging 8-9 mpg over the last couple tanks. Seems to bog when under load going up steep hills.
No engine codes, no loss of coolant, no coolant in the oil, no engine gasses in the coolant. Have replaced O2 sensor, coil/wires/cap/rotor/plugs, thermo, MAP, and checked grounds and vacuum lines. What else am I missing?

8-9MPG................jeeze, you are runnin' a bit rich, lol
Check vacuum hose on the FPR(fuel pressure regulator), FPR can leak internally, your engine will suck in the extra fuel thru vacuum hose
With rich running CAT should be running real real HOT, you should hear metal expanding, and odd noises just after shut down from the CAT
Sticking injector?
Try "Clear Flooded Engine" test
After engine is warmed up, shut it off
Turn key on
Press gas pedal down to the floor and HOLD IT DOWN all the way
Try to start engine
It should just crank and NOT start, not fire at all
If it fires or starts then you may have a leaking injector

Exhaust smells like fuel, not sweet like coolant.
Good info on the FPR. The vacuum line doesn’t smell like fuel but I didn’t know they could leak internally. It’s 31 years old, might be worth just replacing it and giving the strange symptoms sounds like a promising thing to chase.. Haven’t heard any popping from the CAT but I’ll keep an ear out for it.
I’ve done a ton more stuff including pulling and cleaning the injectors, and checking their resistance, but when I put everything in the first post I think it was too much for people to read and I didn’t get any replies :-)
Thanks for the idea, I’ll let you know what I find!
