Whoops!

I changed my oil today (big deal). Anyways, I always take the top of the filter box and write the date and mileage on it, then stash it in the glovebox. Turns out I haven't changed my oil in almost 8,000 miles! Whoops! I finally did get my Thunderbolt exhaust welded up so now I can store my spare tire under the truck again = yay!

it aint worth the price of synth if the truck hasn't had synth in it since it was new........you will get no benefit from the synthetic oil..

Umm yes you will. Assuming you go to the max oil change dates with synthetic oil you save money in the long run.

And synthetic oil isn't worse because you didnt use it from the beginning. Synthetic oil will have an improvement. The one bad thing about switching to synthetic oil is that the oil oil may have been plugging oil leaks in your truck and switching to synthetic could open these oil leaks.

There is simply no factual basis to this myth. You can switch to Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil at any age or mileage and, as long as the engine is in good mechanical condition, you should reap all the benefits that you would experience in a new car. In fact, switching a car from mineral oil to Mobil 1 at higher mileage can help reduce engine sludge and other harmful deposits that may have accumulated over the years. That's why highly regarded companies such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche recommend the use of Mobil 1.

I still use Castrol GTX 5W-20. Haven't had any problem with it. The oil ran out REALLY dark brown/black. With fresh oil and a little SeaFoam, the truck seems happy.

Im like 500 miles over my oil change but i am not that worried about it. I've used synthetic for the last 30,000 miles and this is the first time i have ever went over 3000 mile mark with out changing it. All i can say is the 45 bucks it cost me every 4 to 5 weeks is well worth it....I need to quit drive so much.

I really feel that changing oil every 3000 miles on modern engines with modern oil is a complete waste of money. Before I started taking the train and my bike to work, I was putting well over 1,000 miles per month on my truck. I'll be damned if I am flushing that much money down the drain every 2 or 3 months because "it's always been done that way." I use full synthetic and I extend the oil change interval significantly. I check it regularly to make sure it isn't full of mud of course. I think my last oil change was at least 8,000 miles if not more and it didn't come out bad at all.

I always laugh when I see people dumping their oil every 3,000 miles like clockwork for no reason yet ignore all the other fluids in their vehicle that need service once in a while... coolant, tranny, differentials and transfer case, brakes, etc.
