1994 xlt code 998
1994 xlt code 998
Hello, I just rebuilt the top end of my 4.0. Great learning experience and I think I did everything right. Engine runs good, idles around 500 once at temp. I ran codes with the eec test and got 111 (meaning it's all good?) for koeo. Koer just gave me 998 and I have a check engine light. I would read the code and then it seemed like it was trying to give me another code but it would stall out before three more blinks. 1994 4.0 pushrod v6 4x4. Any help is appreciated
998 (R) Did not pass Key On Engine Off test yet (Get 111 in KOEO first)
Google: 1984-1994 Ford Self Diagnostics Test - KOER ( Key On Engine Running )
Watch the video on doing the Key on Engine running test
998 is most like just an error in test procedure, and the stalling as well
Ford 3-digit codes here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...3-digit-codes/
I had to replace the 3 capacitors in my 1994 4.0l Ranger computer almost 2 years ago, one was leaking causing odd issues and codes
Cheap fix, under $5
1994 Ranger still used speedometer cable so either the cable is unhooked or the gear is damaged, pull out the VSS/cable interface, 1 bolt, and have a hook at the gear
You can hook up a drill to speedo cable and spin it to see if speedometer works, try spinning it in both direction, speed doesn't work in reverse
VSS Speed signal is not used unless you have an automatic or cruise control, if you do and these work then speedo cable is broken

Well you were right, thanks Ron. It had code 157 in memory for KOEO. replaced the MAF and no more codes or stalling. Seems like it is burning a lot of oil out the exhaust and maybe a little fuel, only once the engine is up to temp.
Still idles around 500 if not less which seems weird to me. Going to check compression and spark plugs after posting this. Maybe the speedometer too if I have time.
