I have a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT V6 4.0L 4WD. I am thinking of getting a used engine. Ive been told that only a 1997 Vin 8th digit X 4.0L Pushrod type engine will fit. I can pickup a 1997 4.0 SOHC engine cheap, but have been told it won't fit. I can pick up several newer Engines but was told that it has to be a 1997.; Can anyone shed some Light on this. Why newer or SOHC won't work. Could it be because won't match up with transfer case. mine has a auto transmission.
