2001 4 L SOHC 2 wheel drive vs 4 wheel drive engine compatibility

I have a 2001 Ranger 4 wheel drive that has 190k miles I would like to rebuild a spare engine to have ready. Will a 2 wheel drive engine swap directly into my 4 wheel drive truck? Thanks

I don't think there is any difference except the some early 4.0 SOHC 4WD engines had a balance shaft. This was eliminated with the later 4.0 SOHC engines.

Drain oil, remove pan, lookup thru girdle to see oil pump with balance shaft if it's there.
