2002 XLT engine swap manual to auto
New to the forum...new to owning a Ford Ranger...new to any type of mechanical repair.
Quick history...I bought a 2002 XLT five speed knowing it didn't start. Turns out something broke in the engine as it was full of metal bits. I purchased an automatic engine and kept my original five speed transmission. Both engines are sohc.
I'm in the process of installing the new engine. Just wondering if anyone has done this type of swap and what differences/challenges I'll encounter?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum
4.0l SOHC I assume, if the "new" engine is 2005 or earlier then install new timing chains and tensioners before installing engine, there was a problem with 1997 to 2004 4.0l SOHC tensioners which caused timing chain failures, premature wear, which is why you replace the chains and guides as well.
Timing chain is probably what broke on original engine
On any engine you also replace the rear main seal when engine is out(or trans is off), hard to get at after engine is installed, and costs about $8 so.........better safe than sorry
There is no difference in an engine used with manual or automatic
Manual trans needs a Flywheel bolted to the crank shaft
Automatic uses a Flexplate instead
If its the same engine model, 4.0l SOHC(1997-2012) then your Flywheel can be removed and bolted to the "new" engine.
Other things to replace on the 4.0l SOHC, Knock Sensor, under the lower intake and hard to get at
Check thermostat housing, these had a tendency to crack, not hard to replace with engine in the vehicle, but easier to inspect with engine out
