Just got my self a 4.0 L v6 ranger just over a month ago now with only 80k miles and its been running well, not sure if it was doing it when I picked it up because I wasn't looking for the sound but there's little tick coming from what sounds to be the passenger side of the truck and on the lower half of the engine. I'm thinking it might be exhaust leak but not to sure, the tick increases with the revs. Just wanted to get some thoughts on it from some of you guys before trying to diagnose further. Its not to loud but can definitely hear it from the outside and can just barley hear from the cab. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies back.

 

Sounds like an exhaust leak by your description. Got ramps?

 

yeah I’m leaning towards exhaust leak but not sure, because I just had my muffler replaced for a safety, and I thought that muffler shops were supposed to check for leaks after installation but Maybe I’m wrong… what do you mean by ramps? Like things to drive up on?

 

Yup. Raise it up, get under and feel around with a helper goosing the gas for you.
Should this operation bring you to manifold replacement (very unlikely) don't go with cheap "imports" as a friend did.
I swear his cheapies didn't last 2 years. We were all amazed.

Since the O2 sensors have a 10 year/100K mile lifespan you should replace them while you're in "exhaust mode".
Such a maintenance task will accelerate gaining familiarity with your new vehicle.
