P0171 Code. . .need a little help

P0171 Code. . .need a little help

Had my engine light come on, on my way to work this morning. So i went and bought a decent scanner, plugged it in, got the P0171 code bank 1 lean. Researched a little on here, came up with either the pcv,dirty maf or 02 sensors. I've already cleared the CEL, so far it hasn't come on, granted i've prolly only driven 10-12 miles. Id does also read ready codes, which were misfire,fuel and comp? I'm not to familar with ready codes, so if anyone could shed some light in that area that would help. I plan on checking my intake for one and replacing my fuel filter that i've been putting off for weeks. I doubt that is my o2's, though i guess well find out.

A Ford P0171 is a LEAN code fpr cylinder bank 1, and P0174 is a LEAN code for cylinder bank 2. These codes commonly occur on many Ford vehicles, and are set when the powertrain control module (PCM) sees the air/fuel mixture is running too lean (too much air, not enough fuel).

A P0171 lean code for bank 1 is the cylinder bank on the RIGHT (passenger) side of the engine on Ford vehicles with a V6 or V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.

i got that code and i was my MAF sensor. got it dirty wheeling. some times they can be cleaned but i ad to get another one.

well it went from being one o2 to both. . and along with that now i need the last two catalyic converters. . .so my solution to the problem .. . .high flow cats and custom y-pipe, mainly because the 02 sensors are pretty well rusted into the catalyic converters. o well, so much for a cheap easy fix

i dont have any, it was the first thing i checked. . .ill check again maybe i blew a line off or sumthing, it does sound like its misfiring til it warms up but the rpms dont really drop or anything. . .i wish i had time to tear this thing all apart haha

I believe the ready codes have to do with OBD tests. When you reset the PCM it has to now go through a series of time/tests to verify things are working right. Things like the purge canister and cats.

Once you've driven it for a while it ought to say ready. Meaning it's ready to go to inspection.

What does it mean when it says Not Ready? Mine has said not ready for like a month. I have a code for a EVAP leak that comes up like once a month or something, I know whats causing it I just haven't fixed it yet.

if you have a error in both banks its more likely the MAF because the MAF is reading incorrectly it will cause both sides of the engine to run lean. if it were a 02 sensor it would only cause one side to run lean. I had this code 10 days ago and found that my PCV valve wasn't connected because of the awkward angle caused by a body lift. so make sure all hoses are connected the engine to anything after the MAF sensor and make sure your throttle body boot doesnt have a crack in it caused by dry rot.

Dave, don't mind 04Edge. For the 800th time, I deleted his obnoxious BS. It was very helpful to post them all. In fact, if someone wants to make a thread just with a nice clean list of trouble codes and what the common ones mean, I'll sticky it.

Those 171 and 174 codes are very very common and is usually something that popped off. On mine, it happened when the hose connected to the air intake after the MAF was popped off. Sometimes you just can't find anything wrong and chances are the light won't come back on either.

What is saying "Not Ready"?

Trent, I'm pretty sure there is a driving sequence it has to go through to pass it's test.

Sounds to me like you have a problem and have cleared the computer since. Well.. it might be trying to complete that test and can't because of the problem. ??

That EVAP leak is not uncomon on fords. Check the vacuum lines going to/from and I think there are one or two valves on the evap canister.

whats wrong? wish i would have known, i just threw out my Evap canister

Every single time I've gotten a P0171, it was a vacuum leak.
Once for the upper intake plenum (sp?) gaskets.
The other time for the lower fuel rail gasket.

This was on a '99 4L OHV, which should be same engine in your '00

How did you diagnose and repair those gasket problems? One of my friend's has these codes on his Explorer and there are no obvious vacuum hose leaks I can find. I'm thinking it is one of these gaskets. It also only does it when it is cold, which makes the gasket theory more likely.

well my intake has the Maf sensor, a hose running from the intake to where you pour the oil into the motor and then what i believe to be the iat sensor. . could be wrong on that, i have yet to find the pcv on this motor, i have no egr on the manifold either. my one 02 sensor is trashed as it is, i wanted to pull it out and see if it was in need of replacement, long story short its in definite need of replacement, 90k and i still have most orginal parts on this thing, like the fuel filter, 11-18-00 is whats on the fuel filter. . so of course its a pita to get off, i have no vaccum leaks. . if i did i would thing the truck would idle crappy, i'm doing a full tune up on it, its been about 32k since ive had it so it could use a tune up, i guess ill find out if the 02 sensor was bad. . .

I have resurched all over the internet I have po0174 code with no vaccum leak they say the dpfe sensor is the most commen sensor that goes bad. It tells the pcm when to open the egr and if it stays open too long its like a vaccum leak. I just can't find a prosedure to test it. Any help ? 99 blk ranger 3.0 flex

I had no vacuum leak replaced maf then dpfe then iac then coil and wires. Still code popped up. I replaced upper o2 bank 2 truck runs good now and the light stayed off so far. Idle stays a little high until completely stopped. Any suggestons?

SEVERAL THINGS IT COULD BE, CHECK THE RUBBER ELBOW ON TOP OF THE PCV FOR CRACKS,THEY GET CRACKED & BROKE UNDER THE BEND OF THE ELBOW
