You answered your own question... if you like the feeling of torque, keep the OHV, if you want 6k rpm redline screaming hp then swap in a SOHC. I've driven both many times and they are two different animals.

A 4.0 swap is a MUCH simpler swap than a 5.0. 5.0 is still easy, but 4.0 to 4.0 is so easy it's stupid. There have even been people that run SOHC's on OHV computers... I don't recommend it, but it's been done.

i know i like the mad 5th gear riding but i wanna be able to go faster sooner i like to rev it harder sometimes and i would prolly upgrade the low down torque capabilities of that engine but your right the ohv is an awsom engine i love the ohv but i drove an sohc and that revs so hard and it just carries you right threw the rpms and you just go so much faster and the one i drove was an automatic and an fx4 which is so much heavier than the xlt so if i put it in my truck i would be even faster than the one i drove and that had some muscle, besides all of the things i have done to miune would work on an sohc so i could get around 230-235 hp if i dropped it in there, maybe even more i would have such a fast little ranger id love it :)

The OHV engine uses pushrods to a ' rocker ' which actuates the the valve. A SOHC engine has no pushrods, chains driven off the crank turn the cam and cause the valve to lift off its seat.

Funny thread, i have owned both, and my SOHC is completely insane compared to the OHV. Also my old ranger (automatic) ran 17.8's 17-9's with the OHV, while my stone stock SOHC 5 speed runs sub 16 seconds repeatedly (15.86)
as for you, id suggest you rebuild/build up your OHV, becuase if you want to do an engine swap.. you might as well do a 5.0

Your being a tool. Don't bother with the engine swap at all.
If your going to put all that work into buying and swapping an engine, I will save you the cash and effort right now.
Your NOT going to see any improvement in fuel effeciency.
80 more? MAYBE 40 at the wheels! 230 or greater Horsepower? ROFLMAO! Maybe with a bottle or a huffer, but not on engine alone endless you dial up supersix and order a whole longblock ( about 10 grand! ). For that money you can take your OHV, re-machine it with heads , a cam and have a LOT more torque then any SOHC has made to date.
Jimmy ( 8secsplash / http://www.8secsplash.net/ ) is putting down well over 400lb/ft of torque ( I think he might have crossed the 450lb/ft plateau ) and has run 11's in the quarter, 7's in the 8th mile.
His engine?
Stock 4.0 Block, 0.30 over, O-Ringed and Balanced. Custom JE Flat-Top Pistons, Total Seal Rings, CompCams 422 Grind - Duration-.270/.284 - Lift -.500/.500, 24lb Injectors, 73mm C&L MAF, Custom 70mm Throttle Body, Ported and Polished upper and lower Intake, Ported and Polished heads.
Save your cash, quit the dreaming, just rebuild your OHV.

because its my only vehicle so the sohc seems like it would be an alright swap for about 80 more hp if i crank it right and still 20 mpg thats pretty decent for a ranger with 230-250 hp roughly
