SOHC Swap

Alright I am gonna prolly buy an SOHC and put it in my truck but I want to know for those of you that have had either one or the other or both which one do you guys like more. I have the ohv and I love the torque. But I want more hp. So let me know.

You answered your own question... if you like the feeling of torque, keep the OHV, if you want 6k rpm redline screaming hp then swap in a SOHC. I've driven both many times and they are two different animals.

i love the torque and bottom end of my ohv, only trucks i had with the sohc was a sport trac and a 4dr explorer, they felt like a turbo honda that had to be spooled up to get anything out of them

If your going to go through all the trouble for a 4.0 you might as well swap in a 5.0.

A 4.0 swap is a MUCH simpler swap than a 5.0. 5.0 is still easy, but 4.0 to 4.0 is so easy it's stupid. There have even been people that run SOHC's on OHV computers... I don't recommend it, but it's been done.

I know. I just wish I had a 5.0.

i know i like the mad 5th gear riding but i wanna be able to go faster sooner i like to rev it harder sometimes and i would prolly upgrade the low down torque capabilities of that engine but your right the ohv is an awsom engine i love the ohv but i drove an sohc and that revs so hard and it just carries you right threw the rpms and you just go so much faster and the one i drove was an automatic and an fx4 which is so much heavier than the xlt so if i put it in my truck i would be even faster than the one i drove and that had some muscle, besides all of the things i have done to miune would work on an sohc so i could get around 230-235 hp if i dropped it in there, maybe even more i would have such a fast little ranger id love it :)

All this speed talking, sounds like you need to get a car. A civic or something.

Alex that OHV can move your truck nicely...light with a reg cab long bed. Try having one in a heavyish Ford Explorer when it actually screams for pound shedding...that's when you need a swap.

Funny thread, i have owned both, and my SOHC is completely insane compared to the OHV. Also my old ranger (automatic) ran 17.8's 17-9's with the OHV, while my stone stock SOHC 5 speed runs sub 16 seconds repeatedly (15.86)

as for you, id suggest you rebuild/build up your OHV, becuase if you want to do an engine swap.. you might as well do a 5.0

well i thirst for more power but i still want gas mileage because its my only vehicle so the sohc seems like it would be an alright swap for about 80 more hp if i crank it right and still 20 mpg thats pretty decent for a ranger with 230-250 hp roughly

keep the OHV its a damn good reliable motor..

ya a SOHC.. oh boy it revs up more... ya ok fun... untill the timing chains take a poop.. then you will hate that motor...

I'll take my OHV... iron black... iron heads... push rods... whats not to love...

SOHC FTL. Come to the shop where i work and play with some SOHC timing chains with me some day...youll never own one as long as you live. I would put an iron duke in my ranger before a SOHC
