Bad fuel economy
Bad fuel economy
Hi
fist i apologize if this has been asked before or if this is in the wrong place. I tried looking for posts that help with this before posting
ive been experiencing bad gas mileage for about the last year or so. Im getting about 12-14 combined sometimes lower. I should have about 17 combined. Its a 2011 ranger 4.0 RWD with not even 60k miles and no codes. I read some places that rangers just get bad mileage but i know this not to be the case as i was getting a whole lot more when it was new. I expect to lose some fuel economy with age but not this much. It is not lifted and everything is stock and ive kept up with maintenance
some things ive changed to try and improve this are
oil (routinely)
spark plugs
air filter
fuel filter
MAF (cleaned)
transmission fluid
shocks (it was riding rough anyways)
After more searching i think my next attack with be o2 sensors. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Manual or automatic?
Pickup trucks don't get great MPG just because they sit higher and have poor areodynamics, but low teens are well below Ranger average
Upstream O2 sensors are not too expensive and while they should last 100k miles, if there was any previous engine issues then they can run out of chemicals earlier
Have you changed tires?
Slightly larger tire diameter lowers the speedometer AND odometer readings, so you get false lower MPG
Yes, get the codes read if possible
See if there are any P07xx codes
If you have an automatic maybe the torque converter is not locking up like it should
Check engine vacuum, $20 vacuum gauge, also tests if exhaust is getting clogged up which lowers MPG
Failing Knock sensor in the 4.0l SOHC should set a code but may not, it would lower power so lower MPG as well
Does the engine still feel "peppy", not sluggish?
