Bad millage on 4.0

I've never checked my mileage but it seems to do well, or atleast average. Here's a few things to check. Keep in mind with cooler temps if you have your heat or defrost on that will run the a/c compressor which uses more gas. Also jack up each wheel and put the truck in neutral to make sure the tire spins free, dragging brakes can cause bad mileage. Often overlooked is the thermostat. If your engine is not running at normal operating temp the computer will feed more gas. Other than that an o2 sensor could cause it.

I've only owned my '98 since May, it had 58k on it when I bought it, it has 62k on it now. When I first got it, I was getting about 15mpg. Now I'm down to almost less than 12. I've been averaging about 12.2. Yesterday I filled up, my gauge said I had half a tank, and my trip only said 88 miles. I was not thrilled. But I think my sending unit has some issues. I have a 4.0L supercab so I should have a 20gal tank, but I only put in 7 gallons and it read half. I should have used at least 10 gallons before reading half.

Just a word to the wise...
If your concerned about mileage. There are two very basic things that will make a significant effect.
1) Driving technique. "If your on the brakes your wasting gas" is a very good rule of thumb.
2) Over inflate the tires slightly. I run mine at 3psi over what the side wall calls for and rotate them every 10k miles w/o wear problems.
btw, Were now into some very cold temps here in Mich (teens/20s) and running winter fuel blend with a lower VP. Between those items and me letting the truck warm up for a few minutes, I'm now down to the 17.5-18.0mpg range for 50/50 daily driving.

CHECK THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
About 3 months ago someone got under my truck and cut my feeder gas line going into the tank that I fill up into. They sucked all the gas out (which was about 3/4 of a tank) and left me pissed. I didnt even notice right away, LOL. I was looking at my gas gap thinking didnt I fill up the tank just 2 days before? Went down to the station and gas went all over the place when I tried to fill up. I looked under the wheel well but didnt see it was cut clean the first time. I went to ford and they want over $200, because they sell the whole assemble not just the rubber gas line hose. The problem is it has a special bend to it. I bought gas rated hose the same dimension and it works but it had to bend so bad I cant fill up fast at all. Takes me awhile and I have to hold the gas pump handle the entire time going slow. I used a few extra hose clamps and when I fill up it does not leak at all. I was wondering if even I dont see any leak if possibly I'm venting gas out?
But this thread makes me think no. I bought the 2004 Ranger 4.0 4x4 in March and all summer I was getting 16city 20hwy and now its like 12 and 15. I've been paniced but perhaps its the cold? The winter gas? I didnt think of it? I figured cold is better because it gets so hot in Vegas. my 1980 mustang would just keep running for up to 30 seconds in the summer unless I ran 91. LOL.
So my gas mileage might be normal? OUCH! I took it in thinking a brake was sticking or something.
I need to go to a junkyard and look for a hose but i had to cut mine off so I hope I can get a used one off and save it?

I used to get about 12 city, 15 highway. Then I changed habits. I've found if you go over 65 on the highway, you can kiss your mpg goodbye. I drive on a 55 stretch to and from school and when I stay at 55 I get 20-22 mpg. I also changed how I brake. When coming up on a light, don't accelerate to it, just coast. Sometimes you get lucky too and you don't need to fully stop before getting there.
I know for a fact that none of the mods have given me more than a 1-2 mpg gain. Because when I do run at over 70mph and set the cruise, I'll be around 14-15 mpg. When I drive in the winter city with 4 wheel drive, I will get about 10 mpg. Nothing you can really do about it. I don't know any truck that gets more than 10's city driving with four wheel on here.
In conclusion, possibly try driving slower?
My truck 2001 supercab 4x4 4.0.

I've had mine for about a year & a half and it used to get a constant 15/20 (city/highway) and is down to less than 13 regardless. It doesn't matter if its warm, cold out or what. No one can give me an explanation. I've swapped everything but the O2's & MAF. O2's will be changed when it warms up. Idles rougher than hell too.

so my truck never goes over the n on the temp gauge should i get a new stat? and i just got 13 mgh.
