Before you check chains check the harmonic balancer
Hello everyone I just signed up to hopefully share some information with people who are having the same issue I had. So about two months ago I started to hear the dreaded rattling at idle that all 4.0 sohc owners dread so I check the cats hoping it was those checked the pulleys on the belt assembly and couldn’t find anything wrong especially when I started it on a cold engine without the belt on it still rattled however every 4.0 I’d ever heard with the death rattle never sounded like mine did so I got a stick up me one day and investigated further while in my head dreadful it really could be the chains. However what I found was what made my whole week. I hit the cats and the exhaust and nothing checked everything on the belt drive again and went to test the water pump and once I had made sure it was fine my hand hit the harmonic balancer and it clicked. fords design on the harmonic balancer on the engine was stupid so as a last ditch resort I check to see about the metal ring inside the balancer and I’ll be dam*ed if that wasn’t it.exact same sound and everything. I’m planning on putting up and video on YouTube hopefully tomorrow about what it sounds like to help other folk out in the future and I’ll post the link once I do. Hopefully it’ll help someone else in the future and as always if anyone has any questions just post them up and I’ll respond as soon as I see them. Hope you all have a good day-Matt
