don't go slowmaster. they are restrictive. although do sound great.
i originally had a flowmaster. liked it. but wanted something different. i could actually feel it holding the truck back.
went with a straight through magnaflow muffler. and had custom mandrel bent 2.5" piping from the cat back and i noticed a very small difference in the higher RPM's. not much ,but its something at least. and its dumped right after the muffler . sounds great.

Thats actually pretty good, 8 mpg with those size tires. Those trucks have a thirsty appetite to start with. Fuel ecnomy got a little better after 02, but not by that much. I get 9-10mpg with my 8.1.
You won't notice any performance gains with the 4.0 by doing the exhaust, you want performance gains you go with a super charger, that is if you have the $$$$ for it. If you like the look of a performance exhaust, then go with stainless steal mandrell bent T -304, other wise you are wasting your money by not choosing a SS system, cause they will last only about 4 years tops. My friend has a gibson on his 2500 and you can definately feel the gains with it. The muffler itself is as big as the stock muffler if not slightly bigger and has all mandrel bends. Very good cat back system.

I don't think you'll get much performance out of exhaust on a ranger either, but I would go with a straight through magnaflow. Magnaflow sounds great and is not restrictive like flowmaster.
I had a magnaflow catback on a VR6 (2.8L) Jetta and now on a 2.5L turbo Subaru, they both sound awesome.

No, i missed the last few trips my buddies went to in PA. Some of them are way to ballsy and will go out on the ice and do donuts and what not. They don't realize if that ice cracks their trucks and perhaps their lives are at stake cause some of those quarry lakes are deeeep. I don't take my trucks out on the ice, at least not ice that has deeper water then my tires. You want some serious mud to play it, you go to Treverton PA. They have miles or mud holes to play in.
