ok. so i jus bought my second ranger about a month ago and i love it to death, because it is a major upgrade from my last ranger, but the gas mileage is killing me. down here in south florida gas is $3.20 a gallon and im lucky to be getting 12mpg. everyone who posted on this subject is complaining their only getting 16mpg while im wishing i could get 13, 14, or anything better then wat i am now. As soon as i get some money i will do a complete tune up. Oil change, good oil filter, air filter looks fine, diff fluid, fuel filter, gas treatment, and lube the chasis where applicable. but if that doesnt help much what are a few upgrades that would help me see better numbers and will pay for them self overtime? exhaust, air intake, headers...?

also ttwo more question to add. i go offroad every now and then and i was looking into air intakes. would it be better to get an open cone filter like a k&n or should i think about a closed box set up like a volant system? keep in mind i go offroad.

wat is ur opinion. do u think a flowmaster super40 dual exhaust system will get annoying after a while or should i buy a borla or magnaflow system and keep it a little quiter?

 

That is some poor MPG.

I'd start with the obvious, inspect, clean/gap or replace the spark plugs.

Then I'd move on to NEW air filter, clean the MAF, SeaFoam through the brake booster line, put the rest into the tank.

Lastly, I'd think about the upstream O2 sensors. It'd be nice if you could look at their signals "live" with a scanner to determine they are failing, rather than spending the $$ and having no effect.

I'd also pay attention to the temp guage, making sure the engine is reaching operating temperature. That'd be another parameter to look at with a scanner, verifying the Coolant Temp Sensor agrees with the temp guage.

Personally, I'd get the poor MPG problem fixed before I dropped coin on any intake, etc. mods.

 

ill have to look into all that tomorrow. in the worst case, i figured it would be best to spend money on performance mods to help get better mpg considering if my truck is just bad on gas.

 

I know at one time I was getting around 20mpg with my 4.0, but here lately it's been very crappy. I live in Florida so I dont think I have to worry with the 'winter' fuel problem. The only thing that I havent been able to due yet out of the list that earl43p has listed was change the O2 sensors. I think that probably as alot to due with mine. Now given I do not have a 4x4.... You still should be doing much better.. Lemme ask... do you have a automatic or standard?

i have a 93 4.0 and i had the flowmaster 40 series dual pipes put on it and the gas mileage increased along with the power. the noise doesnt get annoying it actually sounds pretty good and i like it and it doesnt bother me at all...also try upgrading to a K&N air fliter they usually help all my vehicles including my ranger with gas mileage due to the increased air flow.

 

That is bad mpg,mines double lifted on 33s an i get 16mpg (1/2highway,1/2city) I do drive like a grandpa and try to time the traffic lights. I would do what Earl said.

 

Best way tog et good mileage? Keep your foot out of it. I can get anywere from 15-20, depending how i drive.

LEad foot = crap mileage. simple as that.

 

12mpg is with a light right foot. i drive like a grandfather and i still see bad gas mileage. i think i may have found the problem. i just replaced the fuel filter yesterday and i already put 50 miles on it and it seems to be getting better. full tune up is coming soon with my pay check.
