Hey folks. I recently replaced the timing chain guides and there is what sounds like a lifter tick as soon as the truck gets to temp. I had the engine valve covers open for about 3 weeks with rags over them. Could they just be dirty? Or do you think it could have jumped time?

 

That would be a tough call, try using a wooden stick(stethoscope) to listen to engine at various places to try and localize the sound

No, wouldn't be an issue with rockers/cam if things were covered

Engine would run poorly if timing was off

Double check all spark plug wires, at both ends, spark "arc" sounds the same, and has same timing, as valve train noises, and can be engine bay temp related

What weight oil are you running?
If noise only happens after oil thins out you may need a thicker oil

 

Possibly an accessory noise (idler pulley, alternator)?
Maybe try running the engine briefly without the belt?
Does the tensioner hop?

 

I used a stethoscope and it sounds like it's towards the d/s front. Now I'm wondering if the front timing chain guide failed. Weirdly, it gets loud when it gets up to temp. I use OEM 5w-30 like I always have. (I haven't driven it since I did the guides due to the sound) It also has a lean code on the same bank that was not there before. I tried to send a video, so I hope it shows

 

No, seems to not be making noise. I just replaced the idler pulley, the tensioner, and rebuilt the alternator when I first got the truck. I've only had her for about 2k ish miles and those new components have only been on for about 500.
