Engine runs fine smokes then bogs down

Alright 02 4.0 sohc recently trucks been giving me problems but Friday the motor started tapping like a lifter it wasn't bad so I drove it towards a garage but the tapping got faster Truck bogged out and I git it restarted and made it to a parking lot left truck sit till Sunday and it jumped it fired right up and ran fine except for the tap so I tried to make it to the garage and about half a mile down the road it started pouring smoke and bogged back down after running rough so I pulled over and saw that it was leaking coolant any ideas what happened possibley rod through block but I haven't seen it yet is it worth fixing this motor or just replacing it
Thanks

Geeze, not a good thing to see, never heard of that with the 4.0l SOHC engines

2005 to 2011 would be replacement years for that engine, the 2001-2004 models may need new timing chains and tensioner before installing

Ford explorer

If I find a 4.0 from a explorer it should fit as long as it has the same transmission honestly I'm at the point where it doesn't matter if it's a 4.0 sohc or ohv I just want the truck running again and I'm doing another transmission with the motor or does the motor have to be a 4.0 sohc it I change it I need to change computers and ecm on truck or are they interchange

It needs to be a 4.0l SOHC but it can be from a Ranger/B4000, Explorer or Mustang, other wise you would have to change the computer and engine wiring harness, and maybe the transmission, and also reprogram for PATS anti-theft system

Current trans will fit any 4.0l SOHC engine
You will want to swap your current intake and wiring harness to the "next" engine, will make it an easier swap

Only other different engine swap that would make sense, or Cents, is a V8 swap, from a 1996-2001 Explorer, engine, transmission, computer and wiring harness, so same work as any other different engine size, but its a V8! lol
