Just thinking out loud.

I have a 1999 Ranger with the 4.0 OHV engine. It's sitting out back of my shop. It's been parked for a bout 2 1/2 years.. Has about 134K miles on it.

My daily driver 2002 Ranger has the 4.0 SOHC engine. Has now 130K miles on it. Timing chain is driving me INSANE!! It's loud and makes people ask what is wrong with my truck..

What if I was to rebuild the 4.0 OHV engine, and thought about putting it in the 2002??

Comparing these two engines. I don't know what the pro's and con's are.. I haven't been impressed with this SOHC engine.

The other thought.. Is it cheaper and smarter to have Ford fix the timing chain or just go with my crazy idea of swapping engines??

 

You are doing a swap that I'd love to do. the OHV's build alot better torque down low, but up top, the SOHC's own.


IMO, I'm going to find a low mile long block whenever I have money to fix this timing rattle i've had sinc 40k. Not only will I have a fresh 50k or less engine, but I'll also have a newer 4.0 that Ford fixed this timing issue.

 

i love my ohv great motor not a hole lot of stuff goes bad on them expect for the heads
now the sohc the only thing i have seen is a problem on them is the timeing chains. i say if you want low end torque then do it. but if you want race things lol then leave it be.
