Exhaust Drone 100% Cured!

I typically don't post but I figured I would through this useful information out there for foks like me that HATE that freaking Drone from some performance exhaust systems out there.

I recently last spring purchased a used 04 Ranger Edge 4x4 that already had a K&N breather & Gibson Cat Back Exhaust installed. After my 1st 50 miles of listening to the drone from the exhaust I figured that the Gibson muffler was done. I replaced it with a Dynomax WLK-39315 Cat Back exhaust hoping the drone would be at least reduced as Dynomax advertises. Well, that turn out to be a lie and the drone was no better & I believe after about 2K miles it was worse to the point that I hated any 50+ mile road trips, I did a little research and found a direct muffler replacement for the Dynomax 17289 muffler that was currently on my cat back exhaust. It turned out to be a (Don't Laugh) "Jones Exhaust Q524A" Full Bore Quiet Tone Exhaust Muffler available from Summit for $85.95. It had the same 2.5" offset inlet & center outlet dimensions so it fit right in place. It was just a tad bit bigger around so I made a small 4" extension for the band hanger & it fit perfect. EVERY BIT & I mean 100% of any drone is now gone! With no noticable performance decrease too. Hope this helps anyone out there that wishes to eliminate that drone with a performance exhaust. My dynomax muffler is now on ebay.................

Gene

Glad that you found a solution to your drone problem. Im hardly ever on the highway, so the drone that I have doesnt bother me much.

How does the new muffler sound though? Does it have a deeper tone than stock?

Glad you found a solution to your problem. I have mine chopped right after the muffler and it sometimes gets annoying.

Dave is helpful as always.

Yes, the Jone's Muffler definately sounds deeper & louder that a stock OEM would be. In fact after the install of the new Jone's muffler my 1st thoughts was when 1st started was "CRAP, This thing don't sound no different than the Dynomax & I wasted my money". After cracking the throttle a couple times it actually sounds deeper than the dynomax just not quite as loud. Sounds more like a healthier motor than an anemic 6 banger with a glasspack. Once on the road I expected that dreaded drone at above 2K but there was none. Even with the radio off. Hammer & it does sound nice and again with no drone. I find it hard to believe this Jone's muffler doesn't get any more recogonition than it does. I never heard of it till I used Summits sizing chart to match my Dynomax muffler. It is a chambered muffler, but looking in the inlet across the chambers you can still catch view of the outlet. There's just chambers in there with no packing. It looks like someone did some real engineering on this one.

Thanks Again,
Gene
