Which 4.0?

im trying to find out what 4.0 the 98 explorers came with. ohv or sohc? im hoping it is the ohv so i can use some parts off of one i should be getting soon (wrecked) i looked on google and couldnt really find anything.

I think either was an option that year.

yeah thats what i was thinking. dang it, its gonna be just my luck that it will have the sohc

98-00 explorers came with the OHV. never seen one in those years with a SOHC in it.

97 to 199? had the OHV as the base engine and the SOHC as an option before it came standard.

The SOHC was optional for the Explorer beginning in 1997.

Ford Explorer / Mercury Mountaineer / Mazda Navajo

I did plugs in a SOHC one that was a 98. It was a pita. The truck however rewarded me with doing 150 foot long four wheel drifts everywhere in the rain. So I guess it evens out...

I've seen a SOHC in a 97, and an OHV in a 98. So it could have either engine in it.

yup ohv as the base, sohc as the upgraded package
