gas mileage
I'm seem to be doing ok with my truck, i've just turned 150k and i have a truck rack on all the time plus all my tools.I get 260 miles for 14.5 gallons in winter and almost 300 miles in the summer im doing something right.
I've been getting 18-19 Mpg with 4:10's and 31's running down the highway and about 20 minutes of city driving. I can easily get to the 300 mile mark before I'm questioning can if I make it another 10 miles. I had a 98 with 4.0 with an auto that consistantly achived 21-22 Mpg.
I was getting about 11.8-12 mpg in the city in a 1999 4.0L 4x4 auto with 33s and 3.73 gears, replaced the MAF, now i get about 13.4-13.8 all city. Last time i was on the highway, i got somewhere around 18-19 mpg. I usually drive SLOW. i usually keep it below 2500 rpm. I'm still looking for better mileage, I'm thinking about going with a jet performance programmer and throttle body spacer.
My old '94 Mazda B-4000 x-cab with 179,xxx on it gave me 19.6mpg last week and I put 15mi. on it in 4x4 going to work in the snow. I live in hilly country, have the M5OD tranny, and make a game out of playing lights and coasting where possible. I'll probably get better milage after I replace my bad MAF sensor and get its front end work done. I think some people have a lead foot and are in a hurry to go stop at the next light. I hate using my brakes and also dislike downshifting although I do drop down into forth gear most of my way home from work due to the climb. My truck also idles for a minute after I start it up due to the sub-freezing weather I get to enjoy every day
Manual or auto?
With the same truck as you Leadfoot, 98, 4.0, auto, supercab, with offroad package, 3.73 gears and 235/70/16 tires I got 22mpg on the highway. Maybe it's your screen name that makes your mileage so low.
It has been about a year since I posted to this site. I came back to see if others were having problems with gas mileage as well. My 2007 level II Ranger gets absolutely horrible gas mileage. The truck only has 13,000 miles on it, and it has had all of the regular scheduled maintenance. The most mileage I have ever gotten out of a full tank was 248 miles. The sticker mileage for the truck is nothing more than a lie. I have driven on the highway with cruise control on 70 for an entire tank and still have not gotten over 248. Another thing I would like to mention is the truck might be able to tow 6,000 lbs, but you will be stopping every 100 miles to refill your tank. I towed a 6 wheel Polaris Ranger around a lot this past duck season and it made the gas mileage a total joke. I am talking about around 10 miles per gallon. The Polaris Ranger with the trailer I was using was not even half of the vehicles towing capacity. I would hate to see how bad the gas mileage is if you were towing a full 6,000 lbs.
Recently I've layed off driving the FX4 (I would drive it to work, then work on it for a few hours after work each day) and have been driving my 2.3L 2wd 5 spd. After draining the tank once and counting the miles, here are my first set of number's for it: 364.2 miles on 16 gal gives me an mpg of ~22.8. Definitely much, much more DD-type numbers!
Shoot, I've got like 50psi in my tires... Runnin exhaust, intake 01 SOHC 4.0L with auto trans pushin 35's and I get no more than 17mpg and that's on the hwy... around town I get anywhere from 10-14 lol
