gas mileage & dragging brakes

wife called me Friday & said the Ranger was making a lot of noise and was jerking around on the road. Long story short, one of the rear brake shoes (what was left of it anyway) separated from the bracket and wedged itself inside the drum. Given how thin the shoes were vs. the other side (better than 75% left), looks like that side had been sticking & hanging. The gas mileage on the truck has dropped considerably over the last 6 months or so with no explanation (long story, too long). How much would a dragging/hanging brake affect gas mileage?
