Flowmaster super 44....Underwhelming
Hi all new member here.
I had a super 44 put on my 2003 ranger and it's barely louder than stock if I'm in the car. If I didn't know better I wouldn't even know it had an aftermarket muffler. It's only kinda loud if your outside the car facing the tailpipe. I didn't want it crazy loud and obnoxious like some straight piped trucks, but I wanted to at least get some nice rumble. I'm definitely not 'hearing the thunder' as advertised on the flowmaster box.
Am I missing something here? Also from the look of it the truck has like FOUR cats which seems ridiculously excessive imo. 2 mini cats after each manifold, a combined Y-pipe cat and then one more after that.

How can a flowmaster break-in? Will soot buildup on the baffles make it louder or something. Anyway I wasn't expecting an awesome V8 rumble or anything. I was expecting to at least hear something different while driving around. It literally doesn't sound much different than stock except for a slight droning at certain rpm ranges. I can floor the pedal while driving around and still not hear much from the exhaust. The only time I really hear anything is when I start it on a cold morning and hear the high idle from outside of the truck. I've looked it up and it seems like lots of people have had this problem with the super 44's being too quite.

As far as setup is concerned I have the stock setup with just the flowmaster instead of the factory muffler. Maybe I need to hack off two of the cats and put in 1 high flow universal cat or something. I'm not looking to spend big $$$ on this and go true duals or anything.

A muffler alone isn't going to give you any huge differences unless the factory is horribly restrictive. Sound wise, it's only going to get so loud with the cats intact. I have the Super 44's and I put a resonator tip on it and it's got the perfect tone that I was looking for. NOT to loud or obnoxious.

^^ again agree
you need to get a single in dual out muffler and some 2.25 inch pipe and some nice 3 inch about 12-18 inch tips w.e the longest you can fit and it will be louder.
i run my trust straight piped out the side in front of the rear tire and its annoying as hell on the highway and its hard as hell to talk on the phone in my truck

Aside from simultaneously deafening and asphyxiating myself that sounds like a plan Anyway I'm thinking about sawzalling out the 2 main cats and then having the muffler shop weld in 1 high-flow metal cored bullet cat. That outta liven things up.
