How-To: Eliminate 4.0 SOHC 'jolt/buck' symptons

Okay guys. I solved my 'jolting' problem at cruising speeds.

It seems that my K&N OEM replacement filter was indeed sucking up oils from the filter media and contaminating my MAF sensor. The cure was simple enough. Clean the MAF sensor and install a dry paper filter.

Here is a pictorial How To.

Tools recommended:
Gloves - recommended for dirty engine bays like mine
Flathead screwdriver - Optional, to help with removal of MAF plug
Zip Ties - To reseal air box if the clips are broken, such as mine
Cloth - To wipe down air box and MAF
Electrical contact cleaner: To clean MAF sensor

Difficulty: 0.5 out of 5
Time: Less than 10 minutes

Step 1:
Begin by unplugging the MAF connection by pushing down on the clip with your finger or a flathead screwdriver.

Step 2:
With the air box opened, remove the problem causing oil-based media air filter, by lifting it out of the bottom half of the air box.

Step 3:
Show anger at cause of problem by making a fist and then raising your middle finger, making sure it is pointed at the subject.

Step 4:
Remove new dry paper filter from box.
Attachment 176943

Step 5:
Install new dry paper filter with the mesh side facing up and replace top half of air box.

Step 6:
Make sure the air box is sealed tight as not to let in excess air which may also result in the continuation of the jolting symptons.

Step 7:
Go for a test drive and cruise at 40-60mph and make sure symptons do not return.

Step 8:
Problem solved!

*Disclaimer* This is actually not a 100% serious how to. Actually more of a parody. However, this did solve my problem and the photographs are more for humour value. Please take this into consideration before commenting. :jester:*

I like to use CRC Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner on my MAF. It's completely safe on plastics.

You know Takeda is somewhere wringing his hands and laughing evily!!

VICTORY!!!!

Glad you figured out the problem.

crazymikey 01-27-2009 02:42 PM

lol,he was the one I got inspired by to do this thread. Again, this thread actually contains no technical problem solving content.

Fx4wannabe01 01-27-2009 02:45 PM

its not a good how to. doesn't show us how to clean the MAF. better for back out there for a reshoot.

whippersnapper02 01-27-2009 02:47 PM

I'm sure the filter did nothing. You over oiling the crap out of it is what caused the problem.

crazymikey 01-27-2009 02:54 PM

Well if I had a filter I didn't have to oil in the first place, then there never would have been a problem. However, this is about the 10th vehicle I've used a K&N filter in and the first one I've had a problem with.

However, not having to replace plugs, wires or resetting or reprogramming the PCM or doing anything else really made it a simple fix. This K&N filter is 6 years old and has over 190k miles on it. Probably about the 4th time it's been cleaned and oiled, and November was the last time it was done.

chainfire 01-27-2009 03:03 PM

I'm glad it wasn't something serious. I get to try to convince customers of this all the time at work.

crazymikey 01-27-2009 03:11 PM

It was also significantly warmer out today than it has been. The jolting was happening mostly in the -15 and colder range.

Ford04Ranger4.0 01-27-2009 05:48 PM

My jolting was a cruzing speeds, as you know since we talked about it. Just put in a factory filter intoday hopefully that'll fix it. When it gets about 20's im gonna clean the mass with CRC mas cleaner but i noticed my intake tube was dirty so might was that down also and check if my TB is dirty.

Ray_Welder 01-27-2009 05:50 PM

You had the same problem as me then. MAF problem, I win.

Ford04Ranger4.0 01-27-2009 05:51 PM

BTW broken windshield?

crazymikey 01-27-2009 05:55 PM

Very broken. Got that in October. Gravel truck on the highway at 70mph. Stone hit the very edge of the windshield right at the piller and put a big golf ball sized crack in it and it took 2 months to spread all the way across the centre of the windshield. I'm waiting til the spring to replace it, because by then I will need to do an Out of Province inspection on my truck in Alberta when I register it there.

Ford04Ranger4.0 01-27-2009 05:57 PM

How do you pass inspection?

NATEFX407 01-27-2009 05:58 PM

Glad to hear your truck is good to go!

Toreador4x4 01-27-2009 06:13 PM

Glad i was able to help. No one likes to take my advice on here

Also, you never show yourself cleaning the MAF. I hope you didnt wipe it off, you shouldnt touch the filaments with anything.

robert ray69 01-27-2009 06:14 PM

That was pretty funny...

Toreador4x4 01-27-2009 06:20 PM

The k&n filter oil isnt what caused the bucking, the excessive flow of the filter causes spikes in MAF voltage which causes the buck/jerk. the stock filter evens out the air flow and stops the voltage spikes

crazymikey 01-27-2009 08:28 PM

That filter has been in the truck for 6 years with no problems until 4 days ago.

I had cleaned out the MAF prior to my little photoshoot. I wiped it out because the MAF tube was full of slime and crap.

Mark, as for inspection, my truck does not need an inspection unless I continue living in Ontario and change the ownership from my dad's name to my own. If that's the case, then I need to do safety and emissions inspection. Since I am moving out of province, I have 3 months to register the truck in Alberta,so before I move I am going to have my dad write me a bill of sale with no date,so that when I go to register it in Alberta, I change owners there and then do an out of province inspection and get it plated and registered under my name.
