How much trans fluid?

4.0L V6 4X4 Auto 4R55E

How much transmission fluid should I put in? I'm planning on dropping the pan and filter and refilling it. I've gotten mixed answers on this so any help would be great.

Dropping TrannyPan & changing TrannyFilter does NOT fully drain all the ATF in the Tranny, roughly half the capacity,
so you'll likely need 5~7qts of fresh MerconV to refill, after installing a new Filter + PanGasket + reinstalling Pan.
Buy 2 GallonJugs or 8 QtBottles, then handpump ~1qt from TrannyDipTube every 6mths & refresh with the leftover MerconV.

Ah makes sense, thanks for the help. I was under the impression that it dropped it out and ended up overfilling and had to drain it again.

Not sure what you mean?
When you drop TrannyPan+Filter, 5~7 quarts will come down with those; messy, so have several shop rags handy.
Can minimize mess by first HandPumping 1~2qts from DipTube; I use a HandPump per pic below, kept in a large OilTight ZipLockBag between uses.
After new Filter+PanGasket is installed & Pan is reinstalled, refill Tranny with fresh MerconV until level is just above High on DipStick.
Do a short 15~20min test drive to get Tranny fully warm; check ATF level with Engine IdlingInPark on flat ground;
level should now be lower on DipStick; again IdlingInPark, top off ATF until level is in Upper3rd between marks.
I usually check ATF DipStick one more time after next drive, IdlingInPark; then monthly routine, unless a drip on floor, then I'll check all fluids.
Hope this helps.

For what it's worth:
My 5R55E (said to be the same mechanically) took exactly 6 quarts to restore to FULL after my pan drop/filter change.
And yes, it was at the FULL mark at temperature beforehand.

How many miles are on the vehicle/transmission?
