How do you determine if your 4.0 is Sohc or OHV?

Since your ranger is a 2000, you have the OHV 4.0

Ford started putting the SOHC in the Ranger in 2001...

84?-00 is the OHV
01-06 is the SOHC

Explorers started getting the SOHC in 97 as an option.

One other way to tell is to look at the engine its self. The OHV says "OHV" on the intake manifold and the SOHC says "SOHC" on the throtle body cover.
