Performance t-stat...interesting. Fooling the engine into thinking it is running cooler to use more fuel isnt performance...its wasting. modern engines need to run warmed then thier predecesers to fully burn off the A/F mixture. adding extra fuel only makes it run rich, which can lead to the catalyist in the converters to over-heat and melt. on top of that, unburnt fuel will seep past the piston rings washing the think oil film off the cylinder walls (which the piston rings ride on). once it reachs the crankcase it will dilute the oil and enter into the bearing passages, again washing the oil film away and decreasing bearing life.

zach, when I got mine I took it to pepboys. They had an endcap full of thermostats that had visible packaging. It took all of 2 minutes to find the correct one. Ours look very unique. I forgot what vehicle it was listed for. It didn;t say Ranger.

i call BS.......10* isn't going to be that much of a difference in the engine........crap my temp gauge goes down to about 175* when the 190* t-stat i have in there opens and gets the cool antifreeze in there.........now if you take the t-stat out, then you will have a problem because the engine will NEVER warm up...........

it is COMMON knowlegde that a cooler engine makes more horsepower.....

I am not really in it for performance I am looking to keep the engine running a bit cooler, like discussed in another thread.

Wayne you wouldn't happen to have that Maverick part number? What makes you think it is the Maverick one? I will call Summit and see what they say about it and maybe they have something else I can use.

i quit trying to explain anything to u knuckle head. u are stubborn and dont want to accept anything that is different than what u think is right...even in ur political/religious posts u are the same way. ubless ur running a significantly modded engine u NEED the engine to be up to proper operating tempature. these engines are made to run with a designated tempature range to be most efficent and produce the most power.

and i don't have to.......BUT what would be the point in cooling the incoming air in a intake if it wasn't worth it a 180* thermostat will allow the engine to operate at closer to 190*......when a 190* thermostat opens, then engine temp is somewhere around 200*-210* by the time the new coolant starts to fully flow through the engine..........dropping that 10* would actually put the engine temperature at AROUND 190* were you say it should be.......

BS..... The engine only runs rich for a certain period of time, I believe after 20 minutes if the engine isn't fully up to operating temp the computer leans out the mixture regardless... So, yes a stat that is 10 degrees cooler will be fine. Now if you went to 160, you might have to do some computer tweaking.

So to sum it up, you will not have catastrophic engine failure from a 180 stat for Christ sake! Geeez, relax optical illusion....

My understanding is:

Higher water temps = better gas mileage
Lower water temps = better HP

Since the industry is building to government mandated MPG's it could be assumed that they go toward the MPG side over the HP side with this.

Stay with the stock thermostat! The Motorcrafts will last longer than the after-market brands......

I have a 160* t-stat in my Impala, I have the PCM programmed for it. It is actually a common mod for these cars. Granted it was in Conjunction with a complete engine overhaul, But I'd say about 90% of the Cars in the ISSCA have this done and most of them have increased their ET's and not sacrificed noticeable mileage.

Relax a little. Everyone has their opinion. Once your opinion is posted is the thread supposed to stop? I stand by my two sentence opinion and I rarely get into a shooting match about whether I'm right or not. People can take all the opinions that are given and make their own determination.

Anybody can convince themselves that a mod does nothing, or the mod isn't worth the money, or a Ranger isn't a race truck. The trophies I have acquired proves that Rangers are race trucks and the guys that think it isn't worth it are always gonna be slower than me.

When I first started racing I was running a 4banger Saturn. I was stuck at 16.01 N/A. 15.99 became the target (obsession) and spending $200 to shed 2/100's of a second off my 1/4 mile times was worth it. The same $200 for a small gain to 90% of the guys here are a waste of money. Everyone has different goals.

You hit it wayne, I am not going to even get into a debate on this topic of running a lower tstat. I have talked to beard on the phone and he knows what to do.
