Just got a superchip, but have a few questions
Well i found someone giving away a superchip, ya.... fricken awsome, i know.
anyways, it was on a 2001 ranger 4.0 automatic... would it be ok to just put it on my truck directly or does it have to be vehicle code specific?
eventually i will send it to doug to get reprogrammed, but until i finish some mods i'd like to run it like it is
any help would be awsome, even though my truck is 7 hours away this thing will be going on as soon as i get home
thanks all
alon

does the chip have a blue or black plug on it? if its blue doug can reprogram it, if its black i think you will need to find someone else to do it as in previous times i heard him say he couldnt reburn a black plug style chip.
the chip is computer code specific. you will need to have it reburnt before you can use it.

Yes and no, Zach. Most engines from the same year can all use those same chips. I know people who have done that with no problems. Superchips are not so "tuned" as Doug's chips.
You need to submit your code to Superchips -- but that doesn't mean every chip is different. It just allows them to give you the right chip for your general vehicle.
I say try it and if it doesn't work right, just take it out. Follow the install instructions to the letter though, since the connector on the PCM has to be cleaned off properly or you will have problems.

yes but for $30(give or take) it is worth it to just have it reprogrammed by doug. i know i would. plus who wants to do all that work then to find out that it wont work.. cleaning that connector is a pain. then getting it seated right.
if it was me and i was only going to get to be at my truck for one weekend and i wanted it to work i would send it off so the chances of it working are alot higher.

True -- but if you have the chip reprogrammed, you STILL have to clean the connector to use, lol!
I agree that Doug's programming would be superior -- but still, if you're not in the mood to send it off, trying it is pretty low risk, IMO.

oh, i am definately going to be sending it to doug at some point... but i am thinking about getting some headers and new gears, maybe bigger tires at some point, so i dont want to spend $90 on getting it reburned after each mod. i'd ratherjust keep it how it is right now till i am "done" with engine mods
i thought it was like 45 ish.... i was just sayin i dont want to put headers and have to get it reburned, then regear and have to send i tback agian... i'd rather do it all at once
